Diode Models

What are Diodes?? 

Diodes are fundamental electronic components that allow current to flow in one direction while blocking it in the opposite direction. Various models are used to describe the behavior of diodes under different conditions.
Here are some common diode models used to solve numericals related to Diode Circuits.

1. Ideal Diode Model:

This is a simple model that assumes the diode conducts current freely in the forward direction and blocks it completely in the reverse direction. It does not consider any non-ideal characteristics such as forward voltage drop or reverse leakage current.


in this model, the diode will act as a perfect Short Circuit as depicted in above figure and having Forward Resistance Zero and the Forward current > Zero.

2. Piecewise Linear Model:


This model is an improvement over the ideal diode model and takes into account the forward voltage drop across the diode when it conducts in the forward direction. It approximates the diode characteristic using piecewise linear segments.



In this model, there will be a forward voltage drop across the diode say 0.7 V in case of Silicon diode and here forward resistance will not be zero. The equivalent circuit of the diode will be a Forward voltage drop in series with a forward resistance of Diode.

3. Practical Model:

This model basically shows that when a forward voltage is applied then the forward current will not be equal to zero, the Forward voltage drop will be 0.7 V ( in case of Silicon Diode) but the forward resistance will be zero here.

Here the equivalent circuit of diode will be a Forward Voltage Drop only with Forward Resistance is Zero.
